About Calvis

Calvis Williamson is the founder of the The Afrowhisperer (hair skin product company) and Grand Rising Holistic Wellness (her natural health practice. After reading a report that was released in 2016 concerning birthing in the U.S. she was inspired to become a birth worker. It only took one year for her to realize the shortage of postpartum support workers serving the black community. It was then that along with reclaiming traditional postpartum and herbal practices of the Black American South and the diaspora she understood that postpartum birth work was her gift and calling. Calvis has been a practicing herbalist since 2014. She holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science from The University of Florida, an M.S. in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, completed doctoral work towards a Ph.D. in I/O Psychology from Walden University and doctoral studies in Traditional Naturopathy from New Eden College of Health and Science. She completed labor and birth doula training through DONA in 2018. She is currently studying prenatal, birth, and postnatal traditions of the African dispora, at the House of Shiphrah and Puah. Her focus major of study focuses on the Hebraic birth and postpartum traditions of the Caribbean. Her ultimate goal is to open a college that will train the next generation of postpartum birthworkers.
